What Is A Computer Case

Computer CaseComputers come in many shapes and forms and have many things in common. One thing that all computers have in common is the computer case. Computer cases are hard structures which encase the outside of a unit. Depending on the kind of computer a person buys there may be quite a large difference in the style of case that it has.

Early computer cases were somewhat dull and were usually only one color. Unlike the units of today, early models were almost all universally a tan color. In fact, they earned the nickname "beige box" simply because that is what they looked like. This remained the same until a need for different appearances and functionality came into being.

One of the main differences between different casings is the shape. The exterior of a laptop model will look very different than the unit that houses a desktop unit. A desktop originally had a hard shell that encased the tower or central processing unit. Now, modern units may still have this CPU or tower. Other models may have all of the components built into the monitor and have a very different shaped exterior than a model that has a tower.

Even among units that have towers, there may be differences in the appearance or functionality that the exterior can give a unit. Some of these modifications (which are often referred to as mods) are for aesthetic reasons. Some of these modifications can include colored exteriors, illuminated areas of various colors or a differently shaped exterior. Other modifications can be for more practical reasons.

Modern units often heat up very quickly especially if they are being used for gaming. New exteriors have often taken this into account. One modification that is used to combat this is the use of ventilation fans or other areas that allow for a computer to cool down quickly and effectively. This is important since it can help keep the unit from overheating. If a unit gets too hot, it can damage the delicate interior of the unit and may shorten its lifestyle.

Some units that are put together by enthusiasts may include housings that have been home made. These homemade housings will often have many modifications for both function and looks. Some individuals will want windows built into the sides or front of their case so that it is possible to see the inner workings of the central processing unit. Others may want their case to be made from custom materials or in unusual colors or patterns.

A new line of laptops are now available that have interchangeable cases. This makes it easier for their owners to change looks to match their mood or their outfit. This can be great for many people who want to be able to change the way their laptop looks without buying more than one unit. Other ways to change the look of a laptop is to use skins or stickers that can add different colors or patterns.

While the functionality of a unit is more important there is no denying that computer cases can influence the purchasing decision of some individuals. Whether they want a custom color or pattern or want to make sure that they have all of the cooling power possible, exteriors can play an important role in how we use our computers or how we display them.
